Thaddeus Turns Two!

I can hardly believe it!  My baby Thaddeus turned two on Saturday.  He has been such a great joy to our family.  This year with my new camera I was able to document his day from Breakfast to Cake!

He was very excited to pose and smile for the camera.  All day he went around, putting toys up to his face and saying "Cheese!"

I've decided that what is the point of having fine china if you never use it?  So I got it down for birthday dinner.  I plan on doing this again for other birthdays!

What kind of party would it be without presents.  This was the first year Thaddeus was excited about opening gifts.  Though he had to play with each gift before he opened the next gift.  Good thing he didn't get too much...we might still be opening gifts ;)  Favorite gift?  The notebook and pens that Daddy picked up for him.

Of course there was cake too!  I had been practicing with Thaddeus how to blow out a candle the last month...but he got cake fright!  He saw that big cake and smiled but that was it.  Eventually Lincoln and I had to blow the candle out for him.  To his delight!  He got to eat that yummy cake!

Happy Birthday my precious boy!

Starting to Freak Out Here...

ffffound.com via rebecca on pinterest
Okay, so I'm mildly freaking out here.  Christmas is in less than a week and suddenly I feel completely out of time!

I could give you a laundry list of the things left to be done in the gift making department but really the thing that has me nervous is the stocking stuffers...when will I have time to shop for them?  In addition to that I have yet to take the kids shopping for Husband.  I have gifts for the kids to make for each other (which of course they need serious help with).  Add on top of that I have a gift that isn't going to work (this year at least).  Nothing to make your heart pound like finding out the gift you had planned on being simple turning into something hard and time consuming...so I'm scrapping it for my sanity in hopes of finding a more time realistic gift...still searching.
laineylamonto on flikr via Buffy via pinterest

To make matters infinitely worse, my only two pairs of jeans (my only pants) have holes in them so now (yes I could patch them, but still that cuts into my gift making time) I'm having a warring feelings about making new clothes/buying them for myself with the whole making gifts in addition to trying to make what I have work until the new year!  Ugh!!!

Worse than all of this is that I just started reading a deliciously wonderful book and am having a hard time putting it down.

What I need now is a plan...something to help me get through the next 48 hours and back into sanity.  I think that I just might take the kiddos out today for Christmas shopping...though that could prove to be insane as well, especially with my wardrobe issues...

I'll let you know how it goes :)

So are you freaking out yet?  Have all your gifts bought and wrapped?  We have a strict rule no pressies under the tree until Christmas Eve (ever tried to keep a toddler from unwrapping gifts before Christmas?) so I am not even worried about the wrapping...yet :)  I think the house just might stay trashed for a while

How I Do a Handmade Christmas

I am in full gift making mode here.  I'm really actually doing quite well in spite of the fact that I got sick and spent all morning in bed yesterday.  I'm feeling much better and I think that I can safely assume that the need for late night crafting will be at a minimum if not non-existent.  Which to some may seem like an unattainable feat for Christmas gift making.  As I read some of my fave blogs I've discovered that many seem to believe that late night crafting and finishing gifts minutes before giving them is the norm, and I won't lie and say I've never done that but over the years I have become more adept at the holiday gift making.  I thought I might share a little bit of what I've learned over the years.

Sweet Bee Hollow via Buffy via Pinterest

First, I've been making my Christmas gifts to give for as long as I can remember.  Yes, think back to childhood.  I have always been that person who will make something for someone over buy them something...it must be in my DNA because I'm just hardwired that way.

picture originally from a private flickr account
Buffy via Amy Schol Ward via Pinterest

What this means is that I've had a lot of time to get it right.  However there was one year that I didn't make the gifts.  I remember that one not with joy but great sadness.  It took me a couple of years to figure out why buying gifts was harder than making them, I didn't spend anymore money, the gifts were perfect, but somehow it just didn't feel right.  Then I realized that what I forgot to calculate in my gift prices was the time and love that went into making the gifts.  That's when I realized that my handmade gifts were much more expensive than the ones I bought.--side note, the reason we bought gifts that year was because we had spent much of the fall in the hospital with our son.  I literally did not have the time to make gifts, so we went with a theme and bought everyone really nice ornaments, you know the pricey ones you wouldn't usually buy but as a gift they were perfect.

Bower Power via Buffy via Pinterest

Now that I understand why I love handmade gifts so much more it makes it easier to do.  Also, I've learned that planning is key!  I honestly think about Christmas all year long.  This year I wanted to make all the kids (mine and the cousins) sweaters, but I knew I'd have to start in January.  It didn't happen and I'm totally fine with it, but I will be trying another themed project again for next year...I'll make it one year I'm sure :)  Yet, if you want to make all your gifts every year you have to plan.

Martha Stewart via Buffy via Pinterest

Also, you have to be reasonable.  I only give each person 1 gift.  The gifts I make are from the whole family...sometimes I have the kids make simple projects as gifts but as for buying gifts...that will have to wait until they start to earn their own money.  Also, we buy stocking stuffers and sometimes I buy a gift in March because I know it is just perfect for someone and it's on sale.  However, you have to be thinking about it in order to pull it off.  In July/August I ask everyone what they want for Christmas, for those who are particularly difficult to make gifts for I specify that it is to be a gift I can make...no I can't make an impact wrench :)

Greedy for Colour via Buffy via Pinterest

This year I am trying a new strategy for staying organized.  I took a couple hours and sat down and wrote out all the gifts I was making and for whom they were to go to.  Then I crossed out all the gifts I've already made.  Next I took the gifts left to make and estimated how long it would take me to finish, if I needed any supplies to finish up gifts and most importantly if there was a deadline to have the gift finished by.  I then made up a calendar and wrote in what I would work on each day taking into account the responsibilities I had for each day.  Sewing projects are in the morning and knitting projects in the evening.  So far I've stayed on top of my plan.  I did rearrange this a little bit since I was sick also I realized that I didn't have to have certain gifts done by Christmas (though I should still get them done) so I moved them to later in the calendar.

Party Pinching via Buffy via Pinterest

Deadlines are an important part of my planning.  I make sure that I have my gift list draft completed by July/August.  Gifts must be started by the 1st of November.  Also I made sure to have an empty day of no projects so that if something takes longer than planned (or I add something at the last minute) I have a cushion.  Plus, Christmas Eve is reserved for Gift wrapping as Husband doesn't like to stay up until the wee hours of the morning wrapping gifts.

Toni Blake via Buffy via Pinterest

To be honest my goal every year is to be done with all my presents by December 1st, one year I made it but I don't beat myself up if I miss it (like this year).  So far it has been really fun and this year I'm getting the kids involved in the crafting.  Samuel is making a shirt for his brother...I promise I'll take pictures.  Staying happy and sane is more important than the gifts, The Yarn Harlot had a great post on it here.  So remember to stay happy & sane which is easiest when you're in budget, planned and gifting within reason.

Buffy

Well, I'm off to craft more so long as I can stay off of Pinterest!  Hope you all have a great day and if you have any wham bam great ideas for keeping on top of the Christmas gifting let me know!

Holiday Giving

The holidays are more than just giving gifts to friends and family, it is about remembering the gift Christ gave to us by humbling himself to be born as a tiny baby, living a life prepared to make the ultimate sacrifice for all mankind.  Thinking about the sacrifice of the gift Christ gave I want to give back to Him out of gratitude and love so we usually support a Tree of Giving each year.

Our church family has a Tree of Giving that helps local Foster care kids have a Merry Christmas.  I won't lie, things are really tight at our house and we're working really hard to curb spending and such, however that doesn't mean we don't have something to give to someone else.  Just a look to my cupboards overflowing with fabric and you know that is true.  I have something to give, my time, my talents, and a little of my stash.

I picked a tag for a little girl of 5 months who needed hats, mittens and socks and wanted a soft blanket.  Well that was a simple enough request...especially for a knitter.  It was a sacrifice of my time and a little sanity because well this needed to be done by a deadline and I have Christmas knitting to do, however it was worth it.  I know that I can't out give God...not by a long shot.  That by submitting to His command to give to others I am trusting on Faith that I will have more than enough time to finish the stuff I want to get done.

Also, before I show the pics I want to make sure you all know that I did not do this for praise of man but to give praise to God for what He has blessed us.  For everything I made I had the stuff already, of the stash I have over half of it has been given to me...so out of my blessings I shared a blessing.  I hope to inspire and remind you that the best way to make Christmas bright for you again is to stop looking at the list of things you have left to do and to look to those who are left for you to do for...

Now onto the pics...

Many Holiday Blessings to you all!

Christmas Came Early...

Well, I had a wonderful Thanksgiving Week...yes, I wrote week.  Samuel ended up sick on Monday and school was cancelled for Lincoln Tuesday, so we were home all week.  I wasn't sure how it would turn out, but it was a great week.  Vinny got sick on Thanksgiving, so I stayed home from the family dinner to be with him.  While I would have preferred to go and hang out with family, it did give me lots of extra knitting time (Vinny slept the WHOLE time).

Though the best part of the week was that my sister and her boyfriend came up for the weekend.  Oh, my was it fun!  In September my sister and mom came up to visit and before they left I taught my sister how to knit.  So when she arrived we showed off of finished knits...I having been on a cowl kick lately had a few more than she ;)  Still her boyfriend was completely willing to watch the parade of knits and actually showed appreciation for the skill, encouraged me and my sister to continue in our knitterly pursuits and requested hand knits.  Winner!

However, my sister and I are afflicted with a terrible problem, we can't wait to give gifts to loved ones.  We both get so excited about the gift, know it is perfect and so usually we give them early.  The only thing that has helped with this affliction is to wait until the holiday or birthday has passed then go get the gift.  So my sister had to give me my gift when she was here (she mentioned something about wanting to see my expression).  I obliged and with a stiff upper lip allowed her to give me my gift early...

first she gave me these adorable buttons...

Buttons

I wore them all at one time the first couple days, though I'm sure I'll be attaching them to some knitting bags.  Then she gave me this...

Yes that is MADELINETOSH!!!  Oh I just about jumped out of my skin, I was so excited.  You have to understand that I have a very strict yarn budget...Husband says I get $1 a month, $5 if I'm extra good...so this yarn has always been out of reach.  But for Christmas, well that's what gift giving is for.  I can't wait to cast on with it.  However, I will be good (mostly because I have so much left to do for the Christmas) and won't knit with it until Christmas.

I hope you all had a delightful Thanksgiving.

I'm working hard at getting to the computer to blog...but honestly I have so much to do!  Still, I love to chat and always have time for a friend.  Tell me how was your holiday?  Are you super excited for the gifts you're giving?  Expecting something wonderful under the tree?  Grab a Christmas cookie and some hot cocoa and let's chat!

Yup, it's been a while.  I wish I could tell you that it I haven't blogged for so long because I've been too busy crafting...but that isn't the truth.  The simple fact is I was sucked into the everyday busyness of raising 5 kids and well, blogging went by the way side.  You forgive me right?  More so if I tell you this is the first time I've actually been on the computer in 3 days.  Thanks!

I sure do hope to get some major crafting done this afternoon.  The house is nice and clean (well as clean as one can expect with five kids) and Christmas sewing is pretty much all that is on my mind right now.  Still I had a moment where I could pop in and say hi, show off a few pretty pictures from pinterest and enjoy our blogging friendship again.  I promise not to be gone so long again...and maybe if the sewing fates are in my favor (or more to the point it is God's will for my day) I will have some fabulous projects finished up next week, ready to show off :)

So do you have big crafting plans for today?  This weekend?  Husband is working late tonight, it's Oatmeal Bar is slated for dinner so a crafting I will go :) So go check out the links above, especially for my friend Rebecca and her award.  Happy Weekend to you!

More Baby Shoes!

I confess I'm addicted.  I'll go even a step further to say that I'm not even about to enter rehab or even want to change my crafting addiction.  Because let's be honest I'm not hurting anyone by it, not even myself or the bank account.  Yes, I am addicted to making baby shoes.  In fact, I need to make MY baby some shoes, then maybe myself :)

Had another baby shower this weekend which was for a sweet baby girl to come (any day now).  She is gonna be loved very much by her Momma, Daddy & older brother not to mention family and friends.  She is also going to be totally stylin' with some new shoes.  In fact I've made her shoes already (see here). So without further ado the pics...

Instead of velcro I opted to sew on a plastic snap.  I highly doubt that it'll ever get used as they'll most likely be slip on shoes but they are so darn cute!

The pattern is the Little London Loafer from the adorable Etsy shop Sweet Pea Patterns!  This is the third pattern I have of hers and I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE them!  So easy, so perfectly perfect and they make the best baby shower gifts.

I made the 0-3 month size and instead of using the insert I made it like I would a reversible shoe but they aren't reversible.  Honestly I found the construction of this shoe to be entirely fascinating and am looking forward to making many more.

In other news I have had a crazy weekend.  I dropped my cell phone for the thousandth time but it was the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back and the face SHATTERED!  Ugh!  Fortunately we have insurance and I just filed the claim.  Fingers crossed that I get it tomorrow!

Hope you all are ready for a fun week!

So what is your favorite 'Awww, that's so cute' gift to make/give for babies?  Have I inspired you to make some shoes?  Never fear I'm still knitting away, maybe by the end of this week I'll have some photos to prove it!

Baseball Baby Shoes

So I've been having some computer issues and some time issues this week.  However, I am now up and running and have some ADORABLE baby shoes to show off!  Since they are so cute I had a grand time taking pictures of them...

I made these for a shower that was on Sunday and since the Momma-to-be is a friend on facebook I couldn't risk her catching a sneak peek :)  Though as you can imagine they were a smashing hit at the shower.  I chose the baseball fabric because I knew the Daddy-to-be is a big baseball fan.

I have another shower this weekend and I am hoping to make a couple more pairs of shoes for that Momma.  Home made baby shoes are big on the WOW factor at showers but are small on the fabric, budget and time factor.  So really a win-win.

This is the second time I've made this pattern and I have to say I love it!  Not uber crazy about the removable insole, but not a deal-breaker on the pattern.  I don't have any of her patterns that have the directions to make them without the insoles though I'm sure I could figure it out if I wanted to.  The directions are clear and I'm seriously considering making all my shoes as she has another shop with patterns for women's shoe pattern with the soling material to make them indoor/outdoor shoes.  We shall see :)

{{hugs}}
Buffy

Tell me what you think?  Excessively cute or just impractical?  I love baby shoes, if you're afraid to try them out don't be!  They are easy, fun and a real bang for your buck!  I'm in the mood to do a little shoe talking...

A Teaser...

Well I got back home last night.  The weekend was great, the family fun but I was ready to come home...plus if I had stayed any longer I might not have fit in my car...I discovered that you never outgrow the desire to kidnap stuff from your parents house and that while I don't share my parents pack-rat lifestyle it does make their house the best priced thrift store ever!  I also realized I don't have to get my parents anything for Christmas and that by not getting anything I will be giving them exactly what they need and want.

However, now that I'm home I've got new stuff to find homes for not to mention that next week we're all going camping for a week!  We're all very excited yet I've got to hit the ground running and don't get time for break from my vacation.  So today's post will be short and sweet with a few teaser pics of what I brought back with me.  Hopefully I can get the house back in order and tomorrow will share more on my trip and the goodies I found.

Of all that I brought back I'll show you what I'm most excited about.  First my Momma took me shopping at a cute little fabric shop in Eugene for my birthday (this Friday) and they had Heather Ross fabric!  Um, I was so excited as I've only been able to drool over her collections from my computer but have never had a reason to splurge on it...but with Mom footing the bill I got a 1/2 yard!  EEKS!!! I'm stoked :)

The employee was saying that Heather Ross's third Far Far Away collection was due in anytime...now I know how to get my hands on it...send my mom to get it :)

What is even better is the fabric is Sleeping Beauty!  My all time favorite fairy tale!  Okay, enough about fabric...how about we discuss this beauty...

Yup!  That's a camera.  Technically it is a point & shoot but it has massive manual features like shutter speed and an external flash...I can hardly wait to play around with it!  My daddy is a photographer and just got a new camera and while he isn't sure I can keep this one forever, I do get to borrow it for a while :)  I know I'm loved!

Well, I've got to run...Elsa is tired and cranky from the trip and the house doesn't clean itself.

{{hugs}}
Buffy

So tell me do you bring home fun stuff from your parents when you go to visit?  Are you the pack rat or the tosser?  Don't you just love the fabric?  Even though I'm getting ready for a week of camping I can still make time to chat!

A Very Happy Monday!!!

Source

So I'm sitting at my computer writing this Friday afternoon knowing that you won't read this until Monday and that is okay.  You might find it strange, however I have found that in order to keep up with the blog here I've got to be planned and to by planned I mean I have to schedule my posts on blogger.

How is it that I know on Friday that on Monday I will be excited?  Well that is because I get the day to myself!!!!!  Yes, just me and no one to fuss over, no one to break up fights for, no one to worry about food except me.  Okay, jump up and down with me now...

Source Moment Junkie via Brad Ross

Now you're probably wondering how I managed this but really it is just a belated Mother's Day gift from Husband.  He wrote in my card that I could have a day to myself for sewing or go into town to shop or whatever without kids.  I'm sure you're shocked that I've made it this long but really this is the first day that has worked without making Husband take a day off.

What will I do with my day of freedom?  Well, I may run a couple of errands but most of my time will be spent at my in-laws in front of a sewing machine!  Yes, I'ma gonna sew today.  I have several projects that I'd really like to finish and need uninterrupted time to do it.  So with any luck I'll have some project updates and be really rested for another full week!

How was your weekend?  Did you get any crafting done?  Is there some big event you're looking forward too?  Please share, leave me a comment and brighten my day!

Father's Day 2011

Every year for Father's Day I would go in and have our pictures taken for Husband.  In 7 years of we've only missed one and that was because Vinny was in the hospital for a week.

However, last year was a trial to get the pictures taken 6 people in one studio is a lot...add in that 5 of those people are small squirrely children and well you can imagine the chaos!  So this year I asked one of the girls in our youth group if she would take pictures of us.  She loves to take pictures and knows how to edit better than me.

So last Saturday she and I anxiously waited to see if the rain would pass, which it did, and had a wonderful time getting pictures taken.  She came over to our house which was fabulous because the kids are comfortable around here.  We are fortunate to live on the church property and have access to things like an outdoor basketball court, stairs, and wonderful landscaping.

Since my photos have been pretty crummy lately I thought I'd surprise you all and post a few that she took...

These are just a few of my favorites!  She got some really great 'action' shots and I love how most of the photos have that 'not posed' look and that the smiles are REAL not just plastered on.

However, she surprised me by having a photo collage made into a 11x14 print for us.  I was floored, it was so sweet of her.  I of course came up with a great way to give the collage to Husband yesterday...

I simply took a 16 x 20 canvas and traced the outline of the collage onto it.  Then I had the kids armed with Sharpies (yes, I gave them permanent markers...I was watching) and had them write their names (I helped the little ones write their names)  and draw a picture.  I went back and wrote their ages under their names and then wrote 'We Love Daddy' with the love being a heart shape and I included the year on the canvas too.  Then finally I glued the picture down, cleaned off the finger prints.  Now I just have to get/make a frame for it.  It was a quick, easy and low cost gift to make that will be cherished for years.

I hope you all had a wonderful Father's Day weekend!
