20-Minute Challenge Recap

Source

I can hardly believe that today is the last day of the month.  On top of that this is the last day of my 20-Minute Challenge.  Boy howdy has it been an interesting month!  Anyone who devotes a specified amount of time to changing an area of their life is in for a surprise along the way.  I think what struck me the most this time is how my feelings about stuff changed...how my spending changed and my creativity exploded!

So I thought today I might tell you a little more about how I now feel and what has really changed and my plans for the future.

When I first challenged myself last August to get rid of things and de-clutter my home it was out of necessity.  Thaddeus had just entered our home and the struggles of having 5 kids and the accumulation of things was putting a damper on what we could actually do.  We could have moved to a bigger house with more space for our stuff but we couldn't afford to move so we had to get rid of things.  This was a great first step on my path to simplify my life by less things however, it didn't change me as much as this month did.

Part of why I changed so much has to do with the time spent feeling frustrated that my big give last August didn't change the clutter like I hoped it would.  So I think this year the change is greater because I was more intentional, I was more thought out and I had a better plan.  So as I started going through things I saw them differently...I asked myself not "Do I want to keep this?" but "Will keeping this keep me from doing what I want to do?"  That perspective change is enormous.  Really linking my accumulations to my goals and dreams and seeing them for what they are...helps or hinderances helped tremendously.

I think the one thing that surprised me the most is that I realized (not for the first time) how much my husband truly loves me.  All these years I have come home from a shopping trip and often he would become frustrated because 'we didn't need that stuff.'  I would always have a ready reason excuse for why we did need it...and by bedtime Husband had cooled off and was loving and affectionate towards me.

Yet as I started going through boxes of stuff that I had bought because we 'needed' it only to find it unused I became entirely disgusted with myself.  If it weren't for the fact that I am me and I can't escape me I wouldn't have talked to me for a month!  That first week I had to really work through why I buy what I buy and realized I just don't think enough before purchasing.

Finally, I forgave myself for my unwise stewardship and began looking again at my mental list of things I've always thought we 'needed' and then I did something I've never done before...I looked at what I had and tried to envision using what I already have for something I need.  This is where the creativity comes in.  I have a lot of organizing left to do but right now I'm funneling my needs through what I have on hand to make it work!  This is entirely gratifying, to know that you can make what you need without shopping...plus it makes Husband really happy.

Also I've found that it is more than ok to let go of clothes once the kids out grow them...God will provide more when the younger kids get there.  For me this is easy, for Husband this is a faith issue and he has been working on trusting God to provide the needs of our family...and I'm trusting God to provide the needs and wants too ;)

As for the future I know that I want to strive for the minimalist life.  Having less doesn't make you want more...having less means you enjoy what you have more.  Really I don't miss the things I just gave away and I really don't miss having to clean it all either (side note my cleaning time is down now too...amazing  the less you have the less time it takes to clean it all).  I'm pretty sure that I'll keep spending 20 minutes going through things 3 or 4 days a week and making regular trips to Goodwill (I'm on a first name basis with Carlos...he's the guy who unloads my Suburban when I go donate).  However, if one week goes by and I don't get to de-cluttering I won't lose sleep.

I hope you all had a great month...if you've participated even in some small way I'd love to hear what you've learned this month.

Here is a link to a blog post I just read that really conveys how I feel about minimalistic living...in fact if you're interested in learning more his blog is great too!

So tell me how is your life different today than last month?  What is something you thought you couldn't live without but since getting rid of it has freed you enormously?  Let's share from what we've learned!

3 Weeks and 420 Minutes Later

Can you believe that we're starting the final full week of June?!?!  I know I can't.  I remember as a young girl the days would just drag on and having to wait until tomorrow felt like eternity but now a day just flies by and most of the time I can't think straight enough to remember what I did.  I sure hope I'm not the only one :)

Well I'm 3 weeks into my challenge and as it stands my suburban can't hold much more if I plan to run to Goodwill with my kids in tow.  This upcoming week will be my hardest week ever.  Not only is summer here along with all of my kids but this is the week I'm going through the crafty stuff!  Oh my, I'm not sure I'm ready for this.  Yet it must be done.

However, I know that when the week is over and I have just a couple more days of extra purging in other areas I will feel so much better.  Honestly I wish I had a scale to weigh all the stuff I've gotten rid of these last 3 weeks.  I think it would be really cool to see the number just because I really feel like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders!  It would be great to see what that number is.

You will just have to settle for a different number: 420!  That is right I have spent 420 minutes cleaning, purging, and organizing!  How long is that in hours you ask?  7!  That is almost a full work day...actually it is closer to an 8 hour work day than you think because it has been an uninterrupted 7 hours.  When was the last time you spent a full 7 hours cleaning...without any breaks?  Yeah, I'm pretty sure that answer is next to never.

20 minutes adds up fast but feels so painless.  It is quick, easy and most importantly the job gets done!  How many times have you wished you could do something but didn't because you couldn't find 3 or 4 hours to dedicate to the task?  Yet here I sit 3 weeks into my challenge and have 7 hours under my belt!  I have accomplished something that many would scoff as impossible because they didn't think about breaking the work up in chunks.  Or maybe they didn't want to break it down because they wanted it done fast and since it couldn't be done quickly they gave up.

This is a sad fact but so true.  Sometimes we put of dreams and wishes because the complexity of them overwhelm us coupled with our cultures current fast pace and that our houses should be clean and orderly in as much time as it takes a team of a hundred to build a house in a week!  Yet really, what is mostly needed is a little perspective.  We didn't get messy over night and we won't get clean that way either.

Okay, enough blathering and the self-help talk.  I'm just so excited to have gotten rid of so much stuff!

What are you most proud of today?  Is there something you've been putting off because you don't think you have time for it?  Is there something that you could start working on just 20 minutes a day?  Leave a comment and let's work on this together!

What You Can Really Do in 20 Minutes

Sorry it's been so quiet around here lately.  We just hit a busy patch in life, but hopefully with summer here I will be able to get more of a routine going on around here.

Still as busy as it has been I have been clocking my 20 minutes each day.  Can you believe that today marks the start of the 3rd week?!  I know we're 2 weeks in or 4 hours and 40 minutes.  Yes, 4 hours and 40 minutes.  When you see that chunk of time you think well yeah I could get a lot done in that much time...and if you've been following along you have gotten that much done :)

As I was sorting through our closet the other evening I thought I really should show you all how much you really can get done in 20 minutes.  With a quick run for the cell phone I snapped a few barely passable pics and then got to work.  They say a pictures worth a thousand words and I have 9 for you.

I thought I should mention that the font for the word before is called 'gasmask.'  I thought it was rather fitting.  However, 20 short minutes later this is what my closet looked like...

Shocking I know!  Obviously it isn't perfect, there is still more organizing to be done however you can't discount how much better it looks.  Why I can see the floor!  I think it is important to focus not on what didn't get done but what did.  True there is still more to do (hey, there will always be more to do) but what is important is that I got off my keister and actually made a dent in what I thought was overwhelming.

Now if you're wondering how much stuff one can actually clear out in 20 minutes here's what I got rid of...

That is 1 box and half a bag to Goodwill and 1 bag for the garbage.  See, it was easy!

I'm starting my sweater for the Summer Sweater Knit Along over on luvinthemommyhood.  I'll be back tomorrow with more on that.  So for now keep truckin along in purging the superfluous.

How are you doing on the challenge?  Do you have pictures to share?  Grab a garbage bag, set a timer and report back to how much you tossed!  We're in this together so let's share in the pleasures of our accomplishments :)

20-Minute Challenge -- Week Two

Okay, we're starting off week two of our 20-minute challenge and from some strategic planning on my part (aka talking about this endlessly to whomever will listen) we've gained some new participants!  I can't begin to tell you how great I feel about how this has been going.  I just finished up in my master bedroom and yesterday I was able to let my bestie have a look in my room...it was a first for her!  While it isn't perfect it is better and I feel like I'm sleeping better.

I will confess that while it is a fairly simple challenge the word challenge doesn't always mean easy.  Monday was a difficult day for me and was the first day that I didn't want to spend 20 minutes getting rid of things.  However, I set the timer and persevered.  I did feel better when I was done and was happy that I pushed myself to do something I didn't want to do.

One thing that I am discovering while going through this purge is that I need some creative ideas on storing things.  I don't mean Christmas decorations or everyday things but the stuff that I use 3-4 times a week or maybe even a couple times a month.  Stuff that I use therefore I keep but not used regularly.  I have found myself over on Pinterest just searching the mass collection of pictures of great storage ideas.

Source via housetohome.co.uk via joshuasprincess via Pinterest
Source goodhousekeeping.com via joshuasprincess via Pinterest
Those are just a few of the pictures that have had me drooling all week!

I know that you all think I'm creative however with all this crafty knowledge in me God didn't bless me as abundantly with decorating ability.  Therefore I copy...and I copy poorly at best.  Yet I strive for better.  I'm hoping that you, my wonderful readers, might have some great tips or ideas for storing things.  Currently my big quest is to find the PERFECT solution to storing all my patterns.  While yes a nice shoe box sized storage bin works for the short term it isn't fabulous because I've started tracing more patterns and making up my own patterns which I use freezer paper for.

Here is what I would love to be able to do:
-store all patterns in one place (I have a lot)
-storage space must be space effiencent
-easy to access
-quick to find what I like

I know it sounds impossible but I'm sure someone out there has faced and conquered this dilemma and I would love to see a picture!  So if you have an idea, have seen something that might work, or want to share your solution to this problem SHARE please!

This week I'm tackling the most feared space of all...the closets!  Yikes!  I am a little nervous and if you don't hear from me in a few days you might want to email me or check my facebook status because I might have gotten lost in the rubble :)

Hope you all have a lovely day.  Keep up with the tossing :)

A New Hat!

Wow!  I can hardly believe it is Monday, the first full week of June and I'm 6 days into my challenge.  Crazy.  I remember as a child adults always saying how time flew by and thinking 'yeah right' because to a five-year-old time moves at a snail's pace.  Probably because you don't have as many responsibilites ;)

This weekend was tough for me in that Saturday I didn't want to be around anyone!  For those of you who know me really well, that says a lot.  I love people.  I love being around people.  I love chatting and getting together.  Yet Saturday I was on people overload.  If I could have gotten away from myself I would have ;)  Yet with some deep introspection (I spent 10 minutes thinking instead of my usual 2) I realized the trouble was a busy schedule last week coupled with the fact that I hadn't made anything in over a week.  Poor Greta, I hadn't gone near her in over a week.

Husband, being wonderful like always, took the four boys yesterday afternoon and Greta and I spent some quality time together.  For those of you wondering about the princess, she was napping.  I worked on a skirt for myself, but I was really looking for an easy, instant gratification project that would just boost sewer morale.  I tried another project (I'm keeping it hush hush for now) but the moment it became complicated I put it aside.  This just left a hat project for the princess.  I looked at the 14 pieces and wondered if it might be possible?  Could I really sew them all together without mishap and feel rejuventated?  It was worth a shot right?

Don't you love her facial expression?

I think it is adorable.  I even added a fabric button to the top because my points didn't match perfectly.  I completely expect this to become a summer standard accessory.

Well that is all I have for you today.  I hope you enjoyed your weekend and I'll be back tomorrow with more on our 20-Minute Challenge!

Three Days In (or 1 hour)

Can you believe it!  Today is the 3rd day of our 30 day challenge to purge our houses of all the things that consume us.  Wait...let me go run and do my 20 minutes...
{Source via piperlime.gap.com via allison vieger via Pinterest}

Thanks for waiting.  Ahh, I feel better.  I just took out a bag and a box to the suburban for Goodwill and had 2 bags of garbage along with a box of it too!  Now before you start thinking I'm some super tosser and feeling really bad I want you to remember the 3rd guideline...take it out immediately to your car or garbage can.  Yes, I admit that I am not always great on that point so some of that garbage and stuff to giveaway was already to go out before I started my timer.

So now that we're an hour in on time how are you guys feeling?  Are you amazed at what you can truly accomplish in just 20-minutes a day.  I know that the first thing I did was clean out Thaddeus' crib (long story short he sleeps in a portable crib in another room and we haven't moved his crib yet and sadly it became a storage/catchall area).  To be honest I had been putting that off for quite a while, I just didn't feel like I had the time to clean it out and go through everything.  Yet in just one day it was almost done (imagine lots of clean laundry, yarn, books, magazines and odds and ends up to the top of the crib set at the lowest setting).

It is so nice to see things, find things and actually feel at peace when you go into your room at night.  I did however come across a slight problem.  I love bags!  Really I do and I use them frequently but I still need a great storage idea.  Not sure what to do.  Ideas?  I'd love it if you have one.

Also, I think I'm going to have to sit down for a while and go through my yarn and needles and just organize.  A time completely separate from my 20-minute challenge but I'm finding it will be most necessary soon.

I'm not sure if I've ever said it but my ultimate goal in life is to leave this world for the other with only a box full of personal belongings.  I want to hold all things I get loosely, like sand in my hands, so that they are always open for the people around me.

I hope you all have a great weekend and keep working towards your goals!

Please leave a Friendly Thought below sharing your progress.  Any progress is better than nothing.  If you have a blog or a site that has pictures of what you've done post the link below I'd love to see them!  Remember it is only 20-minutes a day and if this Momma of 5 can do it so can you!

A Weekend Road Trip...Part 1

I hope you all had a great Memorial Day weekend.  I know we did!  For starters we only had THREE of our little ones at home because the other two got to go spend it with my family in Eugene, Oregon.  Yes, Lincoln and Elsa both got to spend a couple days with their Nana, Papa, and Auntie Renae along with a couple dogs and a few chickens ;)

However, my family lives about 9 hours from us and because it was to be such a short trip we met them about half way.  Can you say ROAD TRIP?!  Yes, it was a lot of driving, but for anyone who has children (especially those with many kids) any chance you get to reduce the noise in your house is worth it!  Besides it really was a lot of fun.

Early Saturday morning I got up with Lincoln, Samuel & Elsa and we hit the road.  The other two got to spend the night with their grandparents here in town, because Husband works on Saturday's :( , and we started off...

Starting off!  They're pretty alert for 0530 huh?

We didn't dawdle too much on the way down in the morning.  I wanted Lincoln and Elsa to be able to spend as much time as they could with my family.  I was however able to get this quick pic from the car...

The weather was perfect for driving.  Not too hot, not too cold and because we left so early on Saturday morning the traffic was almost non existent (I mean we were on the road).  Once we arrived we met up with my Mom, Sister and her friend that had come along for the drive at the restaurant and inn Cousins.  It was fun, but a reminder of how my kids don't eat out much, a mental note has been made to play restaurant with the kids so they are more prepared for proper behavior in said setting (note, they weren't horrible just unaccustomed).

That cookie was HUGE!  I think it was even bigger than Lincoln's head :)  The boys loved that there was an actual tractor in the restaurant but were upset that they couldn't sit on it.  Not to despair...

There was one outside they could lounge on!  However, soon it was time to say goodbye and start on the next chapter of our journey...

That is my sister with Samuel, who came back home with me.  Before we left The Dalles I had to stop in at the local yarn shop, The Whole Ball of Yarn.  It was perfect!  Not only did she have wonderful yarn, but she was also have a sale I was good and only brought back 3 balls!  I know, crazy me.  It was really a move out of self preservation because I was hoping to find more yarn shops on the way home (I didn't, but more on that later).  I bought this yummy yarn...

The yarn is Queensland Leche (duh, you can see the label) and it is 40% Extrafine Merino Wool, 30% Microfiber, 20% Milk Protein, 10% Silk...it is super duper cushy and soft and I wish I had bought enough for a sweater but didn't have that kind of cash...maybe another time right?
After finishing up at the yarn shop we stopped at the thrift shop that was right next to it.  I fell in love with it.  It was clean (big plus), had great stuff well organized and this...

Yes that is Wool...there are no ball bands but I'm thinking it's Lamb's Pride...or something similar but it is cushy, Aran Weight and definitely wool...it is a little scratchy but not horrid.  I'm think a shawlette with descending colors?  Not sure, but there is some serious yardage and get this...it cost me $2.50!  I know, I practically stole it :)

However I didn't just get the yarn, there was all these cozy finds too...

1) Vintage Sheet, full size $2, 2) Girlie Skull Cotton Knit Fabric, approx. 1/2 yd. $.50
3) Twill fabric, 2yds $1, 4) Cotton Poly blend double knit fabric, 3 yds $1

Did I score or what?!  I know, if the yarn wasn't enough of a deal I came home with all this delicious fabric!  Yet there is more...

1) GAP skirt, 2) Price tag, 3) Fabric Tag
Can you believe that not only did I find this amazing skirt, that I paid $3.75 but it was originally $54!  STEAL!  Then add in the fact that the skirt is 100% silk....  I couldn't pass it up, but sadly the skirt is a little small for me and really not a great style for my post-five-babies-body yet don't despair this beauty will make a great something else...I'm thinking summer top?  What do ya think?

Though I did find something that made my heart stop...

I don't think you people realize how much I LOVE mugs...I mean I absolutely adore them.  Especially ones like this.  Ceramic.  Speckled Glaze.  Two colors.  I could have a wall full...well if I keep finding them I will ;)

Obviously it wouldn't be cost effective to drive 270 miles one-way just to visit a yarn shop and ah-maz-ing thrift shop but now that I have found these quaint shops I think our stops in The Dalles when driving down to visit the fam might just get longer...

There is so much more about our trip to share and I haven't even finished the first half!  Yet, my kids seem to think they need a Momma and not a blogger...shocking I know.  So I promise to share the rest soon (okay I really don't want to give away all my fun stuff all at once, you might get bored with me if I did).

So how was your weekend?  Have any of you been to a great thrift shop lately?  Yarn and fabric goodies you've found for a steal?  Please share!  Also, don't forget about the 20-Minute Challenge!  I'm gonna work on it after the kids are in bed tonight.

The 20-Minute Challenge

{Source via google.com via Buffy Scott via Pinterest}

So here is the scoop as promised in this post.  As mentioned earlier I will be purging my house of all things that I have accumulated.  Also I remind you that nothing is sacred...this even means clothes for the kids, fabric, & yes, even yarn.  More on that later.

However, I can't do it alone and would LOVE for you all to join in with me.  I have a few guidelines just so that we all get the most out of it...for me they will be rules but should you choose to join me in this please view this more as a buffet of ideas and pick and choose what you like or think will work for you.

First, and I think the most important RULE is to spend no more than 20 minutes a day working on your purge.  Yup, 20 little minutes.  Now, I know what you're thinking or what I think you're thinking 20 minutes?!  Are you crazy, I can't purge my house in 20 minutes!  To that I say you are right!  It is ludicrious to think that what took you months, years, and perhaps even decades to perfect accumulate will be suddenly gone in 20 minutes.

However, the point of this purge is not to just get rid of things but to alter my perspective on the things I have in my home.  To refocus my priorities and decide exactly what it is that I need to complete that which must be done.  In order to achieve this I must go slowly.  Also, having such a small time limit prevents the all too common purging problem--burnout.  I know that we all have 20 minutes to spare in our days, I have 5 kids and I know that I can either get up 20 minutes earlier or go to bed 20 minutes later.

Another point to the 20 minute time limit is the Instant Gratification Factor.  As we all know we live in a 'I want it now' society.  If we're going to stick to this for a full 30 days we have to keep the work short, the progress fast and see results everyday.  I promise you will be surprised to find out what you can accomplish in just 20 minutes.

The next rule is, and I will admit this is a toughie, TOUCH IT ONCE.  Yes, you read that right.  You can only touch everything 1 time.  You can make up your options  for what you will do with the item, however you must make your desicion and make it fast.  When I was in middle school one of my teacher's had us watch a video series on how to improve your grades.  The skills and techniques that can take an average or even below average student and push them into the relm of A+.  One of the techniques that stuck with me these last 15 years (plus or minus a year or two) was 'sticking to your first choice.'  This applied to tests, specifically multiple choice, in which the lecturer recommended that once you answer a question you don't go back to change it because more often than not the first answer you put down is correct and that if you go back you might talk yourself out of the right answer.

I think this stratagy will work for our goal as well.  For if we are completely honest with ourselves the longer we think about something the more likely we will keep something we don't need or even hate because we will get wrapped up in all the details like "so and so got this for me" or "what if I need it" or "who would ever want this."  While I don't see anything wrong with keeping memoriablia I do think we keep to much to the point that we don't have room for our future.  The simple act of going on your gut instinct on the item will eliminate this wavering and allow you to make room for the things you love.

My last guideline which is almost as important as the first, is to GET IT OUT OF YOUR HOUSE FAST!  Don't wait until the box is full, don't wait until you're really sure.  As soon as your 20 minutes is up take your bag of garbage to the out door garbage can.  Take your stuff to giveaway in the back of you car/van/SUV and then the next time you're near a drop-off location you can just drop it off.  The importance of this is that you don't want to work hard sorting through everything only to get stuck at the last step.  At the end of June I want to walk through the areas I'm purging and not find boxes to giveaway but to see it open and ready for the future.

There are a few other things I plan to do as well.  Such as limiting the things I bring into the house.  If I go shopping or recieve a gift I will use it to replace something else.  For example, if I go to the yarn shop and get a hank of yarn I will giveaway yarn I already have, or quickly make something to give away ;)  Also, my goal is to fill one box for donations and one bag for garbage, now that I'm thinking about it I might want to check that my paper shredder it working ;)

I really do hope you'll follow along and I have a little schedule in my head of what I'll be doing, but for the sake of accountability I will share it with you all.

Week One June 1-7
Master Bedroom
Week Two June 8-14
Closets
Week Three June 15-21
Kitchen
Week Four June 22-28
Yarn and Sewing Supplies
Last Two Days
Bathrooms

If you're planning on joining in please let me know in the Friendly Thoughts section below.  I'd love to see who's following along and hear about your progress.  Remember, do what feels best for you and your family.  Perhaps 20 minutes everyday is too much but what about three times a week?  Don't hesitate to jump in mid-stream either!

My Life...in a different direction

Is it just me or does have we become a little too attached to our things?  That television is less about entertainment and more about what we should have or comparing our lives and feeling like we fall short.  Just recently, as in the last couple of months, Husband and I gave up watching tv, I mean completely.  At first I thought it would be really hard but surprisingly it hasn’t.  I no longer feel like I’m wasting time on my couch doing nothing.  I’m no longer bombarded by ads for things that I can’t afford.  I also am not frustrated by political agendas.  But I digress…

This isn’t about television, it’s about stuff.  Particularly the bajillion things I own but never use because I’ve got it locked away in some storage bin that I never get into because I really don’t need it.  Husband and I have had some discussions not just on society’s need to accumulate but to save it all.  I really think the saving thing is a hold-over from when our great-grandparents were pioneers and there was no such thing as a grocery store let alone Target.

Recently there has been this big kick on couponing and saving a ton of money on things.  Now, I try to save money just like everyone else but do I really need 12 bottles of men’s body wash in my house?  No I do not, especially since it takes husband 2-3 months to go through one all on his own.  I really could care less if it only cost me $1 a bottle or less, if I have to buy 2 of anything to get the deal but only need 1…I’m only gonna buy 1.

I am by my own definition not a pack rat.  I always have been.  My parents wonder where I got that gene cause they are both bona-fide pack rats.  Perhaps my own disgust at saving things is why I am so frustrated with the current view on saving and accumulating in society.

I’ve come to the conclusion that space is money in my book.  I don’t have space for 50 pounds of rice or a 20 pound box of boneless, skinless chicken breast.  I have room for 25 pounds of rice and 4 pounds of chicken.  I don’t have space for extra stuff and by keeping it around I’m wasting time cleaning and storing things that I’ve concluded I don’t need.  Time that could be spent sewing or knitting or even just hanging out happier with my kids and husband.

So this is it.  It is time for a purge.  I did this last year, but this year I’m gonna go in deep.  Nothing is sacred and I’m even gonna clean out the fabric stash and the yarn…yup that’s right nothing is off limits.  I’m hoping to get it all done in a month.  My goal is not just to get rid of things but to create an environment in my home that is clearer and more open for fun and creativity.
Also, our home is in need of some redecoration.  I’m hoping that by cleaning out everything I can be better able to get some serious painting and redecorating done.  I hope you all follow along with my month long purge.  Perhaps you’ll join me.  More information to come.
